Like its precursors, this is a nifty piece of kit designed to enable extreme sport enthusiasts, whatever their sport, to record their exploits digitally and download the results to PC, MAC or television. Waterproof up to 3m and shock-resistant, the ATC5K Action Camera is ideal for capturing a range of activities including mountain biking, diving, winter sports and sky diving. A range of mounting grips and straps are included to enable users to attach the camera to pretty much anything they wish, including helmets, handlebars and other sporting equipment. There’s even a silicon head strap, and a mini tripod to enable the unit to be used as a webcam. The camera is also able to be anchored in suction mounts for autosports use.

New Features Of The ATC5K

The ATC5K Action Camera still offers us over two hours’ recording with the ability to accept a 4GB SD card. It’s still compact, lightweight and incredibly tough, measuring a mere 11cm in length and weighing in at 260g. It’s still incredibly simple to use, offering one-touch recording and effortless download. But unlike its forerunners, this new and improved model boasts a number of revolutionary features. Gone is the drab black exterior casing, replaced by a hardwearing rubber and plastic cover in funky metallic blue.

A wide angle lens has been added to capture more action, and the ATC5K Action Camera has the ability to take still photos in addition to digital video and audio footage.

Most impressive, though, are the introduction of an infrared remote control facility, offering a truly hands free experience; and the addition of a 1.5” LCD screen, offering instant preview and playback as well as effortless positioning of the camera for optimum filming.

Powered by 2 AA lithium ion batteries, the ATC5K Action Camera is good for over 5 hours’ continuous use and can be operated in high-, medium- and low-resolution modes. All in all, this is a terrific product, offering great value for money and versatility. Comprising the camera itself together with remote control, batteries, mounting accessories, instruction manual, software and AV and USB cables, this package from Oregon Scientific is huge fun and highly recommended for action sport lovers everywhere.

ATC5K versus ATC3K and ATC9K

All three of these cameras are available from Oregon Scientific. We reviewed the cheaper ATC3K and the more expensive ATC9K. The main differences between the three are that the ATC3K doesn’t have an LCD screen at the back and can’t connect via USB to a computer whereas the ATC5K and the ACT9K can do both… but only the ATC9K can film in HD, has a laser pointer to line-up shots, a rechargeable battery and a remote control)
